REMNANTS OF EMPIRE OF THE BRITISH NORTH ATLANTIC
CAG FIELDTRIP ITINERARY
4 June 2016
Participants will uncover the colonial legacies of Britain’s military and naval landscapes in and around Halifax. In the nineteenth century, the Royal Navy and Army established a defence network of naval bases and garrisons, connecting Halifax to Bermuda and the Caribbean, and to Britain’s global empire. This fieldtrip will retrace some of the historical geographies of the British North Atlantic with a particular focus on the role of timber in maintaining these networks. Participants will visit Halifax Citadel National Historic Site of Canada, the old Admiralty House, Maritime Museum Of the Atlantic, and the Black Cultural Center of Nova Scotia / the Africville Heritage Museum. There will also be a demonstration in dendro-provenancing at the St. George’s Round Church.
Price: $10 [funded in part by the CRC in Global Environmental Histories and Geographies]
Leaders: Kirsten Greer, Adam Csank, Robert Summerby-Murray, Kirby Calvert, Margot Maddison-MacFadyen
